Trailer Park: Daredevil Netflix Series

In which I discuss the latest movie trailers.

Disney's at it again!  Not only did they release their trailer for Tomorrowland only yesterday and are only now coming off of the high created from the third Age of Ultron trailer, but now they've gone and released a trailer for their upcoming Netflix series Daredevil.  Check it out here:

With less than a month away from its Netflix premiere, this is likely going to be the last look we get into the series before the first episode.  And, let me be the first to say, this is one Hell of a look at the series, whose cinematic forebear has kept a lot of people in an agitated state since the series was announced last year.

Vincent D'Onofrio is proving to be as inspired a casting decision as The Kingpin in fact as he was in theory.  His indomitable physical presence in the trailer alone sets him up as a must-answer menace, and that's not even factoring into account the squadron of villains that are presumably under his command in the series.  And with Marvel's recent reacquisition of Spider-Man, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the Kingpin-assisted villains from that franchise eek into the show (similar to Arrow's liberal borrowing of Batman villains).

Speaking of DC's hit series, Daredevil is increasingly looking like Marvel-branded Arrow: a darker, more serious small-screen take on a somewhat lower-profile superhero.  The thing is, though, that Daredevil naturally lends itself to that kind of a series.  The liberal use of dark and Christian imagery (including but not limited to night-time storms and the crucified Jesus) promises that it will make full use of that tonal potential for the series and the character.

I can only hope that the costume we have seen in these trailers is simply his preliminary one: that Murdock will graduate from ghetto ninja to the Man without Fear as the first season progresses.  It's a functional disguise, but doesn't hold a candle to the visually striking guise which he is most known for.

Although no mention was made of this in the trailer, let's not forget that the series' peripheral promotional materials have teased the possibility of incorporating Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Crusher Creel (aka, Absorbing Man) into its sister franchise.  Whether this will be included as back story, branch off from the ABC series organically or transport him to New York through the power and influence of the Kingpin has yet to be seen, but it's something that I am stoked to see all the same.  It opens all of Marvel's small screen efforts to crossover potential: promising to swap heroes, villains and cross plotlines liberally across the numerous series.
